Derrick Nesbit Cartoonist and Iillustrator

Although born in Johannesburg, Derrick spent most of his childhood and schooling
in the Eastern Cape and Border area of South Africa.

Derrick studied Graphic Design at the Port Elizabeth Technikon, but went into retail
management and achieved various high powered positions including National marketing
Manager. In 1994, he took the plunge and began his career as a full time illustrator,
chalkboard artist and cartoonist.
Derrick has traveled extensively and spent 5 years traveling annually to the UK to
illustrate chalkboards for some of the large pub groups. His chalkboards now adorn
the walls of pubs and restaurants throughout the Eastern Cape Province.

Derrick has done political cartoons for the East Cape Herald from time to time and
has illustrated segments in Wiel, Autonews, Full Circle, Fleet and various Corporate
in – house magazines on a monthly basis. He is the official cartoonist for Sport
Elizabeth newspaper.
Derrick is well known for his caricature illustrations in private and corporate circles.

He is a prolific and competent cartoonist and illustrator and was commissioned to
design two stained glass panels for Sahara, St. Georges Park Cricket ground for
the World Cup Cricket tournament held in South Africa.
Other achievements include the design and implementation of “Gimme5” Lifeskills and
Aids awareness game for children (grade R and up ) and adults. The game has been
accepted by the Dept. Education and was nominated for a World summit Award.

Derrick has illustrated various books including “My precious Spine & I”
(Eugene J. van Wyk MCSP) Finding Dinosaurs (Phyllis Atkinson – still to be published)
“Tong in die Kies” (Anton de Jager – still to be published), 2 books with Barry Hilton
(self published) and “The Girlfriends Guide to Rugby” (Jaco Louw)

Derrick has also illustrated many training and corporate educational modules as well
as has illustrated school books for MacMillan Publishing in the past.
Through his diverse abilities, Derrick is one of the lucky few cartoonists and
illustrators in South Africa who are able to enjoy a full time career doing something
that they love.
Derrick is married to Minette and has a 12 year old son Richard.
